The Noon Gun on cotton
Installation

Stationed at Lion battery on Signal Hill are two 18 pounder, smoothbore muzzle-loading guns; alternately firing 1½ kg of gunpowder, six days a week at exactly 12h00. Overlooking the harbour and in view of the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town, these cannons have been indicating time since 1806 and are the oldest guns fired daily, in the world.
