Dominique Edwards

About

Dominique Edwards works in sculpture, drawing, installation, video and photography.
Her practice is largely studio based, relying on a physical, and often labour-intensive engagement with material. Her recent body of work, “Feelthings” explores plaster of Paris, a medium conventionally used in a process-only-context, as an end in itself.

Edwards’ work explores the relational aspects of how we are in the world, and how we are in ourselves. She is interested in the “making” and “doing” of things as actions or practices which have settled over the course of centuries into the sediment of our sense-making and imagination. Her process is one of seeking through experimentation and play, negotiating the “in-between-ness” of language and image; of what we inherit, know or understand, feel, think, think we know or understand, don’t know, aspire to know, find – and the act of doing or saying something.

Parallel with her practice as an artist, Edwards lectures part time at various Cape Town based tertiary institutions. She holds an MFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art (2012), a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Cape Town (2003) and a BAFA from the University of Stellenbosch (2002).
